The world of professional wrestling is a complex and often secretive arena, where creative decisions can make or break a wrestler's career. In a recent interview, former WWE star Sidney Akeem, who is now known as Soleil, revealed the inner workings of WWE creative and how it can impact a wrestler's journey. Akeem's story highlights the challenges of bringing a unique character to life and the frustration that can arise when creative interference takes precedence over a wrestler's vision.
Akeem, once known as Reggie in WWE, had a vision for a masked character called SCRYPTS. He pitched the idea to Shawn Michaels, envisioning a story where Rey Mysterio would bestow upon him a mask, giving Akeem newfound confidence for a big win. This would have led to a dramatic turn, with Dominik Mysterio developing animosity over his father's actions, potentially turning on either Rey or Akeem. However, the creative team had other plans.
During his time in NXT, Akeem's character evolved away from his original concept. When the head writer asked about his hobbies, Akeem mentioned slam poetry, which led to the dark poet direction. This shift in focus resulted in a character that didn't align with Akeem's vision. He described the situation as a creative nightmare, with too many cooks in the kitchen.
"On TV, I wasn’t ready because the mask was horrible, the gear was horrible, and the gimmick was horrible. What you saw was not Scrypts, you saw Blink Man," Akeem said. He emphasized his role as a team player, going along with the creative's vision, but ultimately felt frustrated by the outcome.
The current Soleil character, as Akeem explains, represents everything SCRYPTS was supposed to be. He now has creative freedom to execute the vision he wrote in 2020, free from the constraints of the original creative direction. The name Soleil, meaning sun in French, pays homage to his time with Cirque du Soleil, and Akeem embraces the character as a symbol of courage and confidence.
"I put the mask on as a sign of courage and confidence to show that no matter where you come from, no matter what you’ve been through or what people tell you you can’t do, that there’s a superhero inside of everyone," Akeem said. This new character allows him to showcase his true vision and break free from the limitations he faced in the past.
Akeem's story serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between a wrestler's creativity and the creative team's influence. While WWE has a reputation for its over-the-top storytelling and larger-than-life characters, the process is often a collaborative effort. When creative interference becomes a hindrance, it can lead to a disconnect between the wrestler's vision and the final product. This can be frustrating for both the wrestler and the fans, who may not get to see the full potential of a unique character.
In the world of professional wrestling, the struggle between creativity and control is a constant battle. As fans, we often see the polished and entertaining product, but behind the scenes, it's a complex process. Stories like Akeem's shed light on the challenges faced by wrestlers and the impact of creative decisions. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most fascinating aspects of wrestling are not what happens in the ring but the creative processes that shape the characters we love.
